About PLAT Consulting

Based in the greater Durham, North Carolina area, PLAT Consulting is a women-owned historic preservation consulting firm founded by Julianne Patterson. With more than 15 years of experience in the preservation field, Julianne has worked across the public, nonprofit, and private sectors in roles including project management, grant management, fundraising and development, executive leadership, advocacy, oral history collection, research, and public programming.

Julianne holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation, with certificates in Business and Historic Real Estate Finance. Her professional experience includes completing National Register surveys and nominations, local landmark designations, historic paint analysis, historic tax credit applications, preservation planning, fundraising, and community-based preservation initiatives.

A key strength of PLAT Consulting is the ability to work across disciplines and sectors, helping clients navigate the often complex layers of preservation policy, planning, funding, and regulation. Julianne is skilled at translating technical preservation processes and “red tape” into clear, practical guidance that clients can understand and confidently apply to their projects.

At its core, PLAT Consulting is driven by a passion for helping individuals and communities recognize, document, and preserve the places that matter to them. The firm works with private property owners, real estate developers, nonprofits, and local and state governments to provide thoughtful, practical preservation guidance tailored to each project and community, including helping connect projects to funding opportunities and engaging in advocacy support where needed.
